Nov. 20, 1982: "The band is on the field!" One of the great oddball artifacts in college football history is the bent trombone of Stanford band member Gary Tyrrell, who was trampled in the end zone by Cal's Kevin Moen at the conclusion of the most baroque and bewildering play in the game's annals. It took five laterals for the Golden Bears to score a slapstick kickoff-return touchdown with no time left, assuring that the greatest player in Stanford history, quarterback John Elway, would never play in a bowl game.
