Orange Bowl

LEGENDS OF THE FALL

Miami | Jan. 1, 1965

Two legends-to-be met at the Texas goal line. The Longhorns led Alabama, 21-17, late in the 1965 Orange Bowl. On fourth-and-goal inside the 1, linebacker Tommy Nobis says he stopped Tide quarterback Joe Namath, who claimed he stood up in the end zone. The referee sided with Nobis. Said Bama coach Bear Bryant, "If he'd walked into the end zone … then there'd be no question about it, would there?"
