No one believed Miami, 3-4 under new coach Howard Schnellenberger, would leave No. 19 Penn State with anything beyond a paycheck. But freshman quarterback Jim Kelly, a Pa. native making his first start, threw for 280 yards and three scores. Kelly's 25-yard touchdown pass to Jim Joiner in the third quarter gave Miami a 20-10 lead. The Canes won 26-10, and let the word go forth. Four years later, Miami was No. 1.
