Tracking the Candidates

Nov. 29, 2016
Jackson's candidacy is trending in the wrong direction at the conclusion of the regular season. The Cardinals lost their last two games, as Jackson's first multi-interception game of the season came in the home loss to Kentucky. Jackson did account for four touchdowns in the loss, but he's out of chances to impress voters as Louisville won't take part in the ACC title game.

Watson carried the Tigers against a Virginia Tech team that would not go quietly in the ACC championship game as he completed more than 67 percent of his passes and finished the win as Clemson's leading rusher. It was the third game this season in which Watson totaled five or more touchdowns.

Westbrook was putting the finishing touches on his Heisman resume after he caught Oklahoma's first touchdown in its win over Oklahoma State, a 69-yard strike that included a particularly nifty move to extend the play. But after putting up 111 yards he was hit hard over the middle by Oklahoma State safety Jordan Sterns in the second quarter. Westbrook would not return to the game.

Mayfield capped Oklahoma's regular season in style with an efficient performance in the Sooners' win over Oklahoma State. While he threw just 19 passes, Mayfield averaged more than 15 yards per attempt. He also avoided an interception after throwing at least one in each of the prior three games.

Foreman eclipsed the 2,000-yard mark in the Longhorns' regular-season finale, a loss to TCU. He also secured his 13th consecutive 100-yard game. Foreman's consistency will likely earn him an invitation to the ceremony, but Texas' 5-7 season dims his chances of winning.
