PHILADELPHIA -- Virginia defensive coordinator Al Golden
will become the new Temple football coach, a school official told
The Associated Press on Monday.
The official spoke on condition of anonymity because an
announcement is not scheduled until a Tuesday news conference.
Golden will be the latest coach to try and turn around decades
of futility. Bobby Wallace, whose Owls (0-11) had their first
winless season since 1959, announced in October that he would not
be back.
Temple was 19-71 during his eight years as coach.
The 36-year-old Golden is in his fifth year as Virginia's
defensive coordinator, and was a linebackers coach and recruiting
coordinator at Penn State in 2000.
Golden also played for three years (1989-91) at Penn State,
starting for two years at tight end.
The Owls are stuck with an independent schedule with no true
conference affiliation for another season before joining the
Mid-American Conference as a full football member in 2007.
Temple's last winning season was 1990 and they haven't played a
bowl game since 1979.
Since Wallace took over in 1998, Temple was booted out of the
Big East, switched home stadiums and finished it first year as an
independent.
Golden was 31 when he be was hired by Virginia as the youngest
defensive coordinator in the nation in 2001. He also was the
linebackers coach at Boston College for three seasons (1997-99).
