Oregon has suspended backup linebacker Kiko Alonso for the 2010 season after he was arrested for DUI early Saturday morning, the school announced Monday.
The release added that, while "specific details regarding Alonso's involvement within the program during the suspension are still being formulated," the suspension "would definitely exclude" Alonso from playing next fall.
Combined with the dismissal of receiver Jamere Holland on Sunday and receiver Garrett Embry on Feb. 1, the Oregon 2010 depth chart already has taken three hits. More could be forthcoming for a program that has been mired in off-field problems over the past month.
Alonso's arrest indirectly led to the dismissal of Holland. In a Facebook post, Holland mistakenly concluded Alonso had been kicked off the team and blasted the move. Kelly quickly dropped Holland from the team, citing a violation of team rules.
Running back LaMichael James was arrested last week on domestic violence charges. James pleaded not guilty Wednesday to charges of fourth-degree assault, physical harassment and strangulation.
Coach Chip Kelly has yet to take any action on James. He said Friday he was still gathering information.
In another incident, three Oregon players were involved in a Jan. 24 brawl. Kicker Rob Beard was charged with misdemeanor assault and was seriously injured in the fight. Walk-on defensive end Matt Simms also was cited misdemeanor assault in that brawl, and he was dismissed from the team. Another kicker allegedly involved in the brawl, Mike Bowlin, left the team. Simms and Beard have pleaded not guilty.
Alonso had 16 tackles in 12 games in 2009, including one tackle for loss, and forced one fumble.
He would have two seasons of eligibility remaining following the 2010 season.
