Brown makes case for Vince Young

"If they take it away, I think Vince should be awarded the trophy," Brown said on Dan Patrick's syndicated radio show on Monday.

"I think you have to go back and really give that choice to the Heisman Trust. If they take it away, I think Vince should be awarded the trophy," Brown said on "The Dan Patrick Show" on Monday. "Vince was second in the voting, so even if they revoted I would like to see Vince get it."

However, Brown noted that until and unless that happens, any discussion of Young receiving the 2005 Heisman is hypothetical.

"At this point it's irrelevant because the Heisman Trust has not decided to take it away," he said on the show.

Bush and Young dueled in the 2005 BCS National Championship Game, with Young rallying his Texas Longhorns past Bush's USC Trojans for the title.

But that game was played after the 2005 regular season -- and after Heisman voters awarded Bush the trophy. He collected 2,541 points from voters, 933 more than Young.

That was also before questions arose about Bush's eligibility during the 2005 season. Since then, the NCAA has ruled Bush was ineligible because he received illegal benefits and has imposed sanctions on USC, including a two-year bowl ban and the loss of football scholarships.

In July, USC's new university president ordered the school's athletic department to return its copy of Bush's 2005 Heisman to the Heisman Trophy Trust. Bush has not been asked to return his copy and the Heisman Trophy Trust said in July it has not yet decided whether Bush will be stripped of the award.

"The Trust will be considering the issues raised in the USC/Reggie Bush matter, and after reaching a decision will publish it, but due to the complex issues involved and the Trust's desire to reach an appropriate decision, no definitive timetable has been established," the trust said at the time. "Until the matter has been fully considered and a decision is reached, the Trust has no further comment."
