The NCAA is reportedly investigating Texas-based trainer and scout Will Lyles' possible ties to an LSU recruit, just weeks after it asked Oregon for information about Lyles' possible involvement in recruiting a Ducks player.
NCAA investigators have interviewed Trevon Randle, a linebacker from League City, Texas, who signed with LSU last month, according to multiple reports.
LSU officials have confirmed the school paid $6,000 to Complete Scouting Services, a college recruiting firm that employs Lyles. An LSU spokesman, Michael Bonnette, said the school did receive a DVD from Lyles in exchange for the $6,000.
LSU senior associate athletic director Herb Vincent said LSU paid $6,000 for a package that included game films from California and Kansas junior colleges, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune.
ESPN.com reported earlier this month that the NCAA was looking into Oregon's $25,000 payment to Lyles' firm and his involvement in the recruitment of running back Lache Seastrunk, of Temple, Texas, who did end up signing with the Ducks. Oregon has confirmed it paid for the service.
Vincent said LSU used 14 different recruiting services last year. "It's a normal course of business," he said, according to the report.
Vincent said LSU has not been contacted by the NCAA regarding Lyles, according to the Times-Picayune.
Bonnette told the newspaper the school no longer uses Lyles' firm, but did not give any reason.
NCAA rules state a student-athlete may allow a scouting service or agent to distribute personal information to a school, provided a fee is not based on placing the player at a particular school.
A source told ESPN that the NCAA is expected to speak with LSU assistant coach Brick Haley about any connection with Lyles in his recruitment of a student-athlete.
