Oregon State 43, Stanford 3

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) -- Oregon State didn't plan to throw at Mike

Hass, and Stanford clearly didn't plan to defend him.

It just worked out that way, as Hass caught eight passes for 225

yards and two touchdowns Saturday, and Oregon State routed the

Cardinal 43-3.

"I couldn't have guessed that I'd have this many yards and

catches," the sophomore receiver said. "It just worked out that

way."

The yardage total was five short of the Oregon State record,

Robb Thomas' 230 receiving yards against Akron in 1987.

Derek Anderson completed 26 of 43 for 383 yards and four

touchdowns for the Beavers. Steven Jackson, who leads the Pacific

10 in rushing, ran for 148 yards on 21 carries.

Oregon State (7-3, 4-2) all but assured itself of a bowl bid

with the victory, which came in nearly constant drizzle.

The Beavers play Oregon in Eugene next week in the Civil War

before visiting No. 2 Southern California on Dec. 6.

The Cardinal (4-5, 2-5) had won two straight and had hopes of

bowl eligibility -- a wish the Beavers considerably dimmed. Stanford

next has California in the annual Big Game before hosting Notre

Dame and former coach Tyrone Willingham.

"You saw it, they beat us," Stanford coach Buddy Teevens said.

"A good football team. Offensively they controlled the ball.

Anderson I thought threw the ball well. Jackson ran hard."

Tim Euhus -- a senior tight end playing in his final game at

Reser Stadium -- had six catches for 61 yards and two touchdowns for

Oregon State, which had 633 yards in total offense.

The last time the Beavers came off a bye they got upset 38-17 by

Washington, so coming off the break before Stanford they struck

quickly, jumping out to a 14-3 first-quarter lead on Anderson's

9-yard TD pass to Euhus and a 52-yard scoring pass to Hass.

Stanford's lone score came on a 36-yard field goal by Michael

Sgroi in windy and wet conditions in the opening quarter.

Oregon State widened the gap when Brandon Browner intercepted

Lewis' pass, and Anderson found Hass with a 53-yard touchdown pass

a play later.

Jackson added a reaching 3-yard touchdown run to make it 28-3

before Kirk Yliniemi kicked a 28-yard field goal as time wound down

to make it 31-2 at halftime.

Yliniemi added a 27-yarder early in the fourth quarter, and

Euhus ran in a 20-yard scoring pass from Anderson before a safety

in the final minutes for the final margin.

Chris Lewis completed nine of 23 passes for 92 yards and an

interception. Trent Edwards took over in the third quarter and

completed seven of 21 passes for 53 yards. Mark Bradford had five

catches for 65 yards.

"Those guys are pretty good. They're really fast, they swarm,

their DBs are really good," Lewis said. "I mean, I put them right

up there with USC's defense."

Jackson would not say if Saturday's game would be his last at

Reser. Questions about whether he'd leave Oregon State for the NFL

have dogged the junior all season.

The fans who braved the wind and drizzle started chanting "One

more year!" at Jackson as time ran out.

Jackson went into the game atop the Pac-10 with 124.2 rushing

yards per game and is the league's defending rushing leader.

Though he wouldn't talk about his future plans, Jackson did say

it was important that the seniors got a proper farewell from the

Beaver fans.

"This group is special to me because they're one of the main

reasons why I'm here," he said. "They had a big influence on why

I decided to come to Oregon State. I wanted to send those guys out

with a bang."

Stanford was considered out of it after a 35-0 blanking by

Oregon, but rebounded with wins against UCLA and Arizona State in

successive weeks.

But they were thoroughly outplayed by the Beavers.

Stanford had a loss of seven total yards offense in the second

quarter, and managed 76 yards of total offense in the half. Oregon

State held the Cardinal to a loss of 12 yards on ground for the

game.

"Their defense really just shut us down all afternoon,"

Teevens said. "Shut down the run, forced the pass, put pressure on

the quarterback, did a good job from a coverage standpoint, so

there was not a whole lot that was productive for us out there."

Last season, Oregon State went to Palo Alto and fell behind 21-6

before rallying to win 31-21.
