AMES, Iowa (Ticker) -- Austin Flynn and Brett Meyer combined

for 176 yards and a pair of touchdowns to help Iowa State snap a

10-game losing streak with a 23-0 victory over Division I-AA

Northern Iowa in the season opener for both teams.

After Brian Jansen kicked a 37-yard field goal to give the

Cyclones a 3-0 lead in the second quarter, Flynn connected with

freshman wideout Todd Blythe on a 23-yard scoring strike under

two minutes later.

Flynn completed 2-of-3 passes for 37 yards and also rushed for

10 yards as Iowa State posted its first win since September 6,

2003 against Ohio.

Meyer, who started, closed the first half with a 14-play,

68-yard scoring drive. He completed seven consecutive passes,

hitting Jon Davis with a three-yard TD pass to give the Cyclones

a 17-0 lead at halftime.

The redshirt freshman was 15-of-24 for 139 yards in his

collegiate debut.

Sophomore Stevie Hicks had 111 yards on 23 carries and freshman

Tony Johnson capped a 10-play, 65-yard drive in the fourth

quarter with a one-yard scoring run. The Cyclones dominated

time of possession, holding the ball for 37:53, including over

21 minutes in the second half.

Senior linebacker Brandon Brown had eight tackles and tackle

Brent Curvey added 1 1/2 sacks as the defense limited Northern

Iowa to just 99 yards.

Tom Petrie was just 8-of-19 for 63 yards as the Panthers -

ranked sixth in the ESPN/USA Today I-AA poll - lost their second

straight season opener.
