JONESBORO, Ark. (AP) -- Arkansas State kicker Eric Neihouse hit
two fourth-quarter field goals to led the Indians to a 13-9
comeback victory over Troy State on Saturday in a Sun Belt
Neihouse's 27-yard field goal with 12:44 left gave Arkansas
State (2-5, 2-1) a 10-9 lead and his 24-yard field goal with 1:35
left put the Indians ahead by the final margin.
"We made the plays we needed to make critical times in order to
win," ASU coach Steve Roberts said. "I thought there were several
big things that occurred in the ball game. One, Eric Neihouse put
through two key field goals and gave us a four-point lead which I
thought was huge.
"Then, there were the three turnovers the defense got for us. I
thought those were huge. We had fumbles that we recovered there.
And, then there was Alex Peoples' interception. We were able to
capitalize and get points on two of those turnovers."
Both of his field goals came after big plays by the Indian
defense, which turned in a season best showing by allowing the
Trojans (3-3) just nine points. The leading score came after
Arkansas State's Josh Williams had stopped Troy State on the
next-to-last play of the third quarter.
The field goal was set up when Alex Peoples forced and recovered
a fumble from DeWayne Batterson with 6:36 left. The drive was kept
alive when Jason Wood caught a pass for a 3-yard gain after it was
"The defense and special teams played good enough to win, but
our offense was basically off," Troy coach Larry Blakeney said.
"(Arkanas State) had a couple of good things happen for them to be
able to get down the field for the last score."
The Indians did little in the first half against the Trojan
defense, but did manage to capitalize on the only turnover of the
half for a brief lead. Williams' hit on Aaron Leak forced a fumble
that Quinton Thomas recovered with 4:14 left in the half.
After an Antonio Warren 5-yard gain, Nick Noce hit freshman
Patrick Higgins for a 42-yard touchdown pass with 4 minutes left in
the half. Eric Neihouse's kick gave the Indians a 7-6 lead. Troy
State responded with a quick-strike seven-play 70-yard drive that
ended with Greg Whibbs' 36 yard field goal with 24 seconds left to
regain the lead.
The Trojans had taken the lead late in the first quarter on a
6-yard pass from Leak to Greg Whibbs. The extra point kick was
blocked by Brian Flagg leaving the lead at 6-0 with 1:29 left in
