Temple 34, Syracuse 24

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Walter Washington ran for 185 yards and

three touchdowns, and threw for another score, to lead Temple to a

34-24 win over Syracuse on Saturday.

Washington set the Big East season record for yards rushing by a

quarterback with 816, breaking the mark set by West Virginia's

Rasheed Marshall (666) in 2002. Washington now has 2,740 yards

overall this season, breaking the school record of 2,577 set by

Henry Burris in 1994.

Washington's 15 touchdowns this season also tied the school

record set by running back Paul Palmer in 1986, when he finished

second in the Heisman Trophy voting.

Washington's performance this season has been a rare highlight

for the Owls (2-8, 1-4 Big East), who have had 13 straight losing

seasons and were kicked out of the Big East conference. The Owls

begin life next year as an independent.

The Owls led 21-3 at halftime, then held on when Syracuse (5-5,

3-2) rallied in the third quarter.

Syracuse did not seem to miss leading rusher Walter Reyes, out

with a torn shoulder muscle. Damien Rhodes comfortably filled his

spot, running for 200 yards and three touchdowns.

Rhodes nearly led the Orange back in the third quarter with a

31-yard TD run down the left sideline, then another 16-yard scoring

run to make it 24-17. He had a 2-yard score in the fourth.

Washington, though, didn't got flustered. He dove in for a

4-yard touchdown and Ryan Lux added a 41-yard field goal in the

fourth quarter for insurance. Lux also had a 28-yarder in the third

quarter.

Washington nearly did it all for Temple in the first half.

He connected with Phil Goodman for a 24-yard TD pass and had

scoring runs of 1 and 19 yards. The 1-yard score was set up by a

trick play, a 51-yard pass from wide receiver Ikey Chuku to Buchie

Ibeh.

Former Syracuse star and Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan

McNabb was at the game held on his home field, dressed in a

Syracuse jacket, sweatshirt and hat.
