The Citadel 54, Furman 51, OT

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- The Citadel gained a school record 641 yards as the Bulldogs beat Furman 54-51 in overtime Saturday.

Tory Cooper's 5-yard touchdown run won the game after The Citadel (4-2, 2-1 Southern Conference) held the Paladins (2-4, 0-2) to a field goal during their overtime possession.

The Bulldogs trailed by 10 going into the fourth quarter, but took a 45-41 lead on Cooper's 1-yard TD with 3:49 to go in regulation. Mike Brown returned the kickoff 76 yards for a score to put the Paladins ahead 48-45, but The Citadel tied it with 1:19 to go in the fourth quarter on a 32-yard field goal by Mike Adams.

Bulldogs quarterback Duran Lawson went 28-of-37 for 386 yards and ran for 100 yards to set a school record with 486 yards of total offense. Cooper led The Citadel with 136 yards rushing and had three touchdowns, while Andre Roberts had nine catches for 122 yards.

Quarterback Renaldo Gray led the Paladins in rushing with 76 yards and completed 15 of 32 passes for 289 yards. Patrick Sprauge had nine catches for 238 yards and three touchdowns.

Furman kicker Scott Beckler missed three field goals before making a 36-yard attempt in overtime.

The Paladins are off to their worst start since going 3-8 in 1994, while The Citadel is on its best start since going 11-2 in 1992.

The 105 combined points were the most scored in 87 games between the rivals.
