QB tandem works as Va. Tech takes down Furman
BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Kenny Lewis Jr. caught a touchdown pass and ran for a score, and Virginia Tech went back to its two-quarterback system in a 24-7 victory against Furman on Saturday.
Darren Evans scored the third touchdown on a 3-yard run as the Hokies (1-1) made good on their plan to get their running game going. They accumulated 261 yards on the ground, including 112 by quarterback Tyrod Taylor, against the overmatched and outclassed Paladins (1-1).
Chris Truss caught a 17-yard pass from Jordan Sorrells with 6:02 left in the game for Furman's only score.
Taylor and Sean Glennon divided the quarterback duties as the Hokies reverted to the tandem system they used last season. Coach Frank Beamer changed his mind and decided not to redshirt from the more mobile Taylor after the Hokies lost their season opener to East Carolina.
Lewis' first touchdown came with 8:41 left in the third quarter on a 10-yard pass from Glennon. The 64-yard drive was highlighted by a 50-yard Taylor run.
The Hokies got possession right back on Furman's 31 when free safety Kam Chancellor recovered a fumble, and Lewis scored on a 23-yard run to make the score 17-0.
The only score of the first half was Virginia Tech's 22-yard field goal by Dustin Keys with 29 seconds left.
While Virginia Tech had success on the ground, the Hokies had only 68 yards in the air -- Glennon had 42.
Sorrells threw for 213 yards.
This was the first meeting of the two teams in more than 60 years, when both were in the Southern Conference. Virginia Tech is now in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
