SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Keenan Reynolds set an NCAA record by scoring seven rushing touchdowns, including the game winner in the third overtime, and Navy downed San Jose State 58-52 on Friday night.
Reynolds rushed for 240 yards on 36 carries, becoming the fourth quarterback in Navy history to run for more than 1,000 yards and pass for more than 1,000 yards in the same season. He also became the ninth quarterback in NCAA history to score at least 20 rushing touchdowns. He has 26 on the season, one shy of tying the NCAA mark.
"Guys are blocking their butts off the whole game," Reynolds said, according to Sports Xchange. "I think that definitely had something to do with it. We pride ourselves on grinding people, and grinding them and grinding them until they don't want to play us anymore. Hats off to my teammates."
Both teams scored touchdowns on their first two overtime possessions, with Fales connecting on a 10-yard pass to Kyle Nunn and Thomas Tucker running in from 5 yards out. Reynolds went 25 yards and 7 yards for Navy (7-4).
"Fales is everything that is advertised," Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo said, according to Sports Xchange. "What a quarterback he is. Unbelievable quarterback, but we got a pretty good quarterback ourself, too.
"Duel of two quarterbacks. Different styles. Both of them played well. I'm just glad our guy made one more play," Niumatalolo said. "The kid is unbelievable. They say he's 185 pounds. I don't know how heavy he is. He is a tough sucker mentally and physically. ... Keenan Reynolds is as good a quarterback as I've been around in option football."
Parrish Gaines intercepted a pass in the end zone to stop the Spartans' third overtime drive, and Reynolds went 25 yards on the next play for the win.
Darius Staten caught a 3-yard scoring toss from Reynolds, who has thrown for a touchdown and rushed for a touchdown in six consecutive games.
San Jose State took a 16-10 advantage into intermission.
Fales took over San Jose State's career lead for both touchdown passes (60) and passing yards (7,835), and Jones became San Jose State's all-time leader in receptions. He caught seven passes and has 240 for his career.
The Spartans took a 28-24 lead early in the fourth quarter on a 4-yard pass to Winston. Fales then ran in the two-point conversion.
Navy scored on Reynolds' 38-yard run with 7:06 remaining to regain the lead at 31-30.
The Spartans marched down the field, with no timeouts, to tie the game. Nunn caught a 2-yard pass for the touchdown, and Jones hung on to the two-point try with no time on the clock to send it to overtime.
Fales tied the school record for touchdown passes and became the school's all-time leader in passing yards when he completed a 25-yard scoring toss to Tucker early in the second quarter. Austin Lopez missed the extra point, and the Spartans held a 9-0 lead.
The Midshipmen took the ensuing kickoff and marched 84 yards in 10 plays, all on the ground, to pull within 9-7. Reynolds went the final 12 yards for his 21st rushing touchdown of the year.
Before the game, a moment of silence was observed on the 50th anniversary of President John F. Kennedy's assassination. Kennedy served in the Navy during World War II.
