STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) -- Not bad for a third-stringer.
Morency scored on runs of 19, 6 and 5 yards to help the Cowboys
(8-3, 4-3 Big 12) rebound from consecutive blowout losses to No. 6
Texas and No. 1 Oklahoma.
"We turned to him today and said, 'OK, we need you to play,'
and he did," Cowboys coach Les Miles said. "It's a mark of a good
football team when you can turn to guys and put them in the fray
and count on them."
Oklahoma State scored 21 points in the third quarter -- a period
in which Morency rushed for 170 yards -- to pull away from Kansas
after leading just 16-10 at halftime.
Kansas (5-6, 2-5) now must beat Iowa State next week at home to
become bowl eligible for the first time since 1995. The Jayhawks
lost their fourth straight game and 10th straight Big 12 road game
and might have lost another quarterback.
Adam Barmann, a freshman making his third start for the injured
Bill Whittemore, hurt his right ankle when Greg Richmond sacked him
in the first quarter. He limped to the locker room and played just
three series in the second half.
"I told our kids in the locker room, next Saturday will define
the 2003 Jayhawks team," Kansas coach Mark Mangino said. "You
play well and win that game, and all is forgotten about all the
bumps in the road."
Morency had rushes of 41, 24 and 20 yards in the pivotal third
quarter as he replaced the injured Bell, the Big 12's leading
rusher with 124 yards per game. Top reserve running back Seymore
Shaw also missed the game with an injured thigh.
The Cowboys also played without defensive end Antonio Smith,
offensive tackle Corey Hilliard and cornerback Darrent Williams.
"The good news, I'm told, is that some of these injuries are
just nicks and they will be back, if not for Baylor, surely in the
season finale," Miles said.
Oklahoma State scored on four of its five first half
possessions, gaining 267 total yards, but had trouble getting the
ball in the end zone. Luke Phillips kicked field goals from 34, 24
and 20 yards.
Kansas got two field goals from Jerod Brooks, and Moderick
Johnson pulled Luke's pass in with one hand for a 13-yard
Luke hit Mark Simmons for a 19-yard score with less than a
minute to play, and the pair connected again for the 2-point
