SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) -- Quarterback D.J. Stefkovich scored on a 1-yard run in overtime to lead Rhode Island to a 12-6 upset win over Massachusetts in rainy and windy conditions on Saturday.

The Rams (2-7, 1-5 Colonial) held the Minutemen's offense, which had been averaging more than 33 points per game, scoreless as UMass scored its points on three safeties, tying their own single-game Championship Subdivision record set in 2005. Rhode Island limited UMass quarterback Liam Coen, who needed 99 yards to become the program's career passing leader, to 22 yards on 7 of 22 passing and two interceptions.

Rhode Island took a 6-2 lead into halftime on field goals of 23 and 26 yards by Brian Giannecchini.

The Minutemen tied the game at 6-6 when Kyle Harrington sacked Stefkovich in the end zone with 14:24 left in regulation.

In overtime, Stefkovich hit Jimmy Hughes with a 23-yard strike, then ran the ball three straight times.

Adrian Owen intercepted Coen on 4th-and-eight on the final play of overtime.
