One of the Kansas State Wildcats' most explosive offensive options from last season won't be with the team in 2014.
Quarterback turned wide receiver Daniel Sams confirmed with ESPN.com through Twitter message Monday night that he will be transferring from Kansas State after the semester.
The school made it official on Tuesday, issuing a statement that Sams was leaving to be closer to his family in Slidell, La. Since K-State granted the release, Sams can compete and receive financial aid immediately upon enrollment at any FCS institution other than Stephen F. Austin, which plays the Wildcats this season.
Sam cannot transfer to another Bowl Subdivision school.
"Daniel requested to be able to continue his playing career at an FCS institution so that he could be closer to some of his aging family members," Kansas State AD John Currie said in a statement. "We appreciate his contributions and wish him the best."
After backing up Heisman finalist Collin Klein during the Wildcats' Big 12 championship run in 2012, Sams spent much of last season splitting snaps at quarterback with juco transfer Jake Waters.
Sams wound up leading all Big 12 quarterbacks with 807 yards rushing, which ranked ninth overall in the league. But during K-State's late-season surge, which included wins in six of its seven final games, Waters gradually took over the full-time job, pushing Sams to the sideline.
In the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl against Michigan, Sams only attempted one pass.
To get back on the field, he requested a position change to receiver during the offseason. But he had only two grabs for nine yards in K-State's spring game.
"I am thankful to Coach Snyder for the opportunity I have had here at K-State and also the fans for being so supportive," Sams said Tuesday in a statement. "I have become a better teammate, football player and more importantly a better person during my time at K-State, and I want to wish my teammates and coaches nothing but the best next season."
