Dana Holgorsen to return to West Virginia

Dana Holgorsen will return to West Virginia next season, athletic director Shane Lyons said Wednesday.

Lyons made the announcement after a previously planned evaluation of the football program following a 7-5 regular season.

"Dana Holgorsen will return as our head football coach in 2016," Lyons said in a statement. "After evaluating our football program after the close of the regular season, I believe that continuity is best for our program.

"I know that Dana, his staff and everyone who supports Mountaineer football was disappointed with how our regular season ended, following a four-game winning streak. Dana and I will continue to work together to strengthen our football program. No one wants to win more than Dana and I, and we will work together to ensure success."

There was speculation Holgorsen, who was in his fifth season at WVU, would not be retained after finishing 7-5 this season. The Mountaineers lost four straight games to ranked opponents in October, followed by a four-game winning streak in November. They finished with a 24-23 loss at Kansas State on Saturday.

Under Holgorsen, the Mountaineers are 35-28. They will play Arizona State in the Motel 6 Cactus Bowl on Jan. 2.
