Fresh off its first bowl win since 2003, Washington State has extended coach Mike Leach's contract through the 2020 season, the school announced Tuesday.
The announcement came as no surprise after Leach guided the Cougars to a 9-4 season and was named the Pac-12's co-Coach of the Year along with Stanford's David Shaw.
"Mike Leach and his entire staff have done a tremendous job in building our football program, and the goal is to keep moving forward," WSU athletic director Bill Moos said in a statement. "Cougar football has returned to the upper echelon of collegiate football, where it most deservedly belongs. I believe I speak for all Cougar fans when I say we want Mike Leach leading our football program for many years to come."
WSU also announced defensive coordinator Alex Grinch and defensive line coach Joe Salave'a signed multiyear contracts. Grinch, who was hired in January after serving as the safeties coach Missouri, made an immediate impact on the Cougars' defense, which allowed 27.8 points this season, down from 38.6 a year ago.
The Cougars finished 6-3 in conference play -- third in the Pac-12 North -- and beat Miami 20-14 in the Hyundai Sun Bowl.
