Jimbo Fisher on Jim Harbaugh: I applaud the guy

Count a national championship winner among the few college coaches to support Jim Harbaugh's controversial Florida spring practice idea.

Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher applauded Harbaugh for taking Michigan to IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, for the Wolverines' first four spring practices, according to The Palm Beach Post.

"I applaud the guy," Fisher said Tuesday, according to the newspaper. "He's doing things he has to do to be successful.

"Jim beat the rules. That's fine. I applaud Jim for trying to do something different."

Michigan opened spring practice Monday at IMG, a prep powerhouse with top-notch facilities.

Harbaugh has come under scrutiny from many of his coaching peers, mostly in the SEC, for the potential recruiting advantages and the impact on student-athletes' mounting time demands that this week in the Sunshine State will do for Michigan. The school is on spring break this week.

Fisher, whose Seminoles ushered in the nation's top recruiting class last month, told the Post that he is not losing sleep over the potential recruiting ramifications of Michigan holding practices on his state's turf.

But Fisher does wonder why the Wolverines are allowed to practice at IMG when, he said, he and three other coaches were forbidden by NCAA rules to speak at an IMG coaches' clinic during the spring evaluation period in April.

"I started thinking -- we can't speak on their campus during the evaluation period, and they're allowed to practice there when no coaches are allowed to be out [recruiting]?" Fisher said, according to the paper. "Don't tell us we can't speak at a clinic there but they can practice."
