CB Malcolm Mitchell sprains ankle

ATHENS, Ga. -- Malcolm Mitchell's experiment as a two-way player for the No. 6 Georgia Bulldogs will have to wait at least a week.

The sophomore sprained his left ankle during Thursday's practice and will not play in Saturday's game against Buffalo.

Georgia associate athletic director Claude Felton confirmed Friday that Mitchell will miss the Buffalo game and said the Bulldogs' medical staff has not determined whether Mitchell will be available for next week's game against Missouri.

Mitchell was a Freshman All-SEC receiver last season, ranking second on the team with 45 catches for 665 yards, but shifted to cornerback during spring practice to bolster the Bulldogs' secondary depth early in the season -- particularly while senior Sanders Commings sits out the first two games on suspension.

Georgia coach Mark Richt has said he expects Mitchell to split his time between offense and defense once Georgia's defensive depth returns to normal, but the Bulldogs will be without another starter after Mitchell's injury.

He was listed as a starting cornerback on the depth chart for the Buffalo game ahead of redshirt freshman Devin Bowman.

Bowman and sophomore Damian Swann already figured to play a number of downs against Buffalo, and true freshman Sheldon Dawson could now play a greater role in Mitchell's absence.
