Ring says SEC champs, not ACC

Former Florida State offensive lineman Menelik Watson received his ACC championship ring on Wednesday with one major glitch: The ring reads "2012 SEC Champions."

"I couldn't believe it when I opened up the package," Watson said. "I feel privileged, and I feel slighted at the same time, but hey, I'm one in a million. I guess the ring guy was making too many and either fell asleep at the machine or he must be an SEC fan. Somebody's got some 'splainin' to do.

"It's really nice. It just says SEC on it."

SEC champion Alabama might have something to say about the typo, but a school spokesman at FSU says, so far, it's been the only ring with the error.

"The other ones they've looked at are right," said FSU spokesman Elliott Finebloom. "It's 100-something rings. They don't go through and open every box and inspect them. They assume that if the ones they've given out are right, they're all going to be right. Every other one that's been given out so far is correct. ... There's no report of anybody else's being wrong."

Players who have been drafted and are leaving school, including former quarterback EJ Manuel, already have been given their rings. Finebloom said coach Jimbo Fisher is waiting until he gets back from traveling and vacation to give the entire team its rings as a group. Fisher has been in West Virginia and New York and is expected to return on Friday.

Florida State beat Georgia Tech 21-15 last year to claim the school's first ACC championship since 2005.
