TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Alabama sophomore cornerback Geno Smith was arrested on one count of driving under the influence by the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office over the weekend, according to an online arrest report.
Smith, who was held on $1,000 bond, had worked his way into the starting lineup late last season, playing most notably against Georgia in the SEC Championship Game.
"This is obviously not the kind of behavior we expect from our players," coach Nick Saban said in a statement. "I don't have all of the details at this point and will handle it appropriately once I've had the chance to review the information."
Smith, a former four-star recruit out of suburban Atlanta, last season appeared in 13 games, racking up nine tackles and two pass break-up.
Smith was expected to play a similar role this season, competing at nickel back alongside starters Deion Belue and John Fulton. With his status now in question, sophomores Cyrus Jones and Bradley Sylve appear to be the top two cornerbacks available off the bench.
