TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Alabama assistant strength and conditioning coach Corey Harris has been placed on administrative leave after the school learned he provided impermissible benefits to safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, a source confirmed to ESPN.com on Thursday.
The Tuscaloosa News was first to report the move.
Clinton-Dix, who was suspended indefinitely by coach Nick Saban for a violation of team rules Wednesday, was provided a loan of less than $500 from Harris during the summer, which he repaid before the start of football season. Alabama's compliance office learned of the matter last weekend.
The loan would constitute a violation of NCAA bylaw 16.11.2.2, which says, "an institutional employee or representative of the institution's athletics interests may not provide a student-athlete with extra benefits or services, including, but not limited to ... a loan of money."
A source told ESPN that Clinton-Dix was the only player involved in the matter.
Clinton-Dix is expected to miss Saturday's game against Georgia State but should be back with the team within the month, according to a source.
"When guys get suspended, I never, ever say what it's for, so I'm not going there, so don't ask me," Saban told reporters Wednesday. "It's the way I've always handled this -- every guy. They do right, they wouldn't be getting suspended. And I don't know for how long this will be, so don't ask me that either."
A talented underclassman with excellent range and ball skills, Clinton-Dix is No. 18 on Scouts Inc.'s Top 32 for 2014. He is second on the team with 24 tackles and two pass breakups. His primary backup entering the year, senior Nick Perry, already has been lost for the season with a shoulder injury.
The job of replacing Clinton-Dix will fall to Landon Collins or Geno Smith. Collins, a former five-star recruit at safety, has primarily played at inside cornerback this season but has been working at free safety. Smith, who came on strong at inside corner late last season before transitioning to safety during fall camp, has not seen the field much this year after being arrested and charged with driving under the influence prior to the start of the season.
