BOSTON -- The Boston College and Boston University men's hockey teams will play outdoors in a doubleheader at Fenway Park on Jan. 8, 2010, a week after the ballpark hosts the NHL's New Year's Day Winter Classic between the Boston Bruins and Philadelphia Flyers.
Fenway also will be the host of another unprecedented event -- the first women's college hockey game to be played outdoors. Northeastern University and New Hampshire will play in that historic event at 4 p.m. ET.
The men's game, which follows at 7:30 p.m. ET, pits the past two NCAA champions, who have an intense rivalry. Boston College won the national title in 2008; Boston University won in April in an overtime thriller against Miami (Ohio).
"We are very excited to bring college hockey to Fenway Park in this once-in-a-lifetime event. It's great for the growth
of the sport, as we have seen what the Winter Classic has done for the NHL and its fans," Hockey East commissioner
Joe Bertagna said.
The clash of the men's teams will be the 248th in their series, which dates to Feb. 6, 1918.
Northeastern and New Hampshire have one of the oldest rivalries in women's college hockey, dating to 1975. It will be the 110th meeting between the two teams.
Tickets will go on sale at noon Sept. 17.
