Former Mountaineers quarterback Oliver Luck was named West Virginia's new director of athletics Thursday.
Luck replaces Ed Pastilong, effective July 1. The 50-year-old Luck is currently president and general manager of the Houston Dynamo of Major League Soccer.
Luck played for the Mountaineers from 1978 to 1981, setting school records for touchdown passes (46) and completions (466) and leading the team to a Peach Bowl victory over Florida as a senior.
His 5,765 career passing yards rank him fourth on the school's all-time passing list.
He was a second-round draft pick by the Houston Oilers in 1982 and played five seasons in the NFL.
Luck comes aboard at a potentially crucial time for West Virginia; conference realignments could have a huge effect on the future of the school's sports programs.
"While it's a challenging time in intercollegiate athletics with discussions on conference realignments and other issues, I look forward to working with the university administration, athletic staff and coaches and others to remain a successful, attractive and fiscally responsible intercollegiate athletic program," Luck said in a statement.
