Carolina Challenge recap

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Carolina Challenge, which is run by Dave Telep and staff, brought out the best talent of North Carolina together for one action-packed day. The camp, which was held at Ravenscroft School, also had a featured speaker Alan Stein, an expert in the field of strength and conditioning, lecture to the entire group about how to reach your goals and improve your body.

Standout players

Braxton Ogbueze (Charlotte, N.C./ United Faith)
2012, PG, 6-foot-1, 180 pounds

Whether he was spotting up for 3s or shooting them off the rhythm dribble, the future Florida Gator was impressive with his long ball accuracy. Ogbueze displayed the instincts to navigate his way through ball screens as he distributed the ball in pick-and-pop or pick-and-roll situations, or stopped behind the screen for the jumper. The scoring point guard is also special because he scores with the drive and when he enters the paint his body control and strength allow him to finish at the rim. Defensively, he guards the ball well and doesn't allow dribble penetration.

Aaron Rountree (Wilson, N.C./ Greenfield School)
2012, SF, 6-8, 190 pounds

He is a long, athletic forward who possesses great instincts for the game. The Wake Forest commit played with great demeanor, handled the ball well for someone his size, demonstrated excellent vision and turned heads when he finished in transition. Roundtree is also a capable open shooter, but he needs to add weight and strength to his frame.

Torian Graham (Raleigh, N.C./ Word of God)
2012, SG, 6-4, 180 pounds

The long-armed shooting guard with speed and incredible outside shooting makes scoring look easy. He got outstanding elevation on his release and rotation, as well as glided to the hole and finished with grace and tremendous athleticism. Graham, who finished the day averaging 23 points per game, lists Kentucky as his top school followed by UNC, Louisville, Duke, Georgetown, UCLA, Miami and Clemson.

Codi Miller-McIntyre (Concord, N.C./First Assembly)
2012, PG, 6-2, 170 pounds

The Wake Forest commit shoots it comfortably from behind the arc, has a natural pull-up jumper and is very efficient. Miller-McIntyre also has a tight handle and shows the understanding not to pick up his dribble until he is ready to score or make an assist. He finished the day averaging 15 points per game.

Players to watch

Theo Pinson (Oak Ridge, N.C./Oak Ridge)
2014, SG, 6-5, 170 pounds

Pinson is a superior athlete who is not extremely talented at this point, but he utilizes his ability on every possession. His terrific wingspan allows him to block shots at a moment's notice and when he pressures the ball, he can disrupt the offensive flow. Offensively, he sets up his teammate well, is a factor in transition with, or without, the ball and can drive the lane. He has a load of potential.

Anton Gill (Raleigh N.C./Ravenscroft)
2013, SG, 6-3, 170 pounds

The lefty shooting guard is a dynamic shooter with a quick trigger and great self confidence. He displayed excellent speed and quickness, understands how to get open and is a good ballhandler with the ability to get anywhere on the floor. The ACC is monitoring him, while ECU and Richmond have already offered.

Sleepers

Tyrone Outlaw (Roxboro, N.C./ Person)
2013, SF, 6-5, 190 pounds

He is a solid player who makes open jumpers out beyond the arc with consistency and does the little things well -- find the open man, defend, move without the ball and doesn't force the issue.

Montarius Hall (Charlotte, N.C./ Victory Christian)
2012, PF, 6-8, 220 pounds

The strong, powerful forward plays with a nastiness when it comes to finishing inside, defending and rebounding. Hall rebounds with two hands, finishes drop-off passes with power, works the offensive glass for second-chance points, sets good ball screens and catches everything that comes his way. He can also knock down a 12-foot jumper and shoot the jump hook over his left shoulder. Right now his top three are Charlotte, VCU and LSU.

Notes

Rodney Purvis (Raleigh NC- Upper Christian) can get into the lane whenever he wants. The Louisville commit is a prolific scorer inside of 15 feet and finishes with excellent body control and power. As his jumper develops, especially behind the arc, he will be hard to guard.

Christian Hairston (Greensboro, NC Greensboro Day) has excellent size on the perimeter with offensive versatility. He has soft, feathery stroke behind the arc, can drive to the bucket or post up.

B.J. Gladden (Charlotte, N.C./ Queens Grant) is a big, thick-bodied shooter with deep range. Watching his shot preparation, he gets the ball in the shooting pocket quickly with a quick trigger.

Kennedy Meeks (Charlotte,NC West Charlotte) is an inside presence with a wide body and awesome pair of hands. He added a sweet jumper from 17 feet that extended behind the line. He also throws a solid outlet pass and conditioning is the key for his success.

T.J. Warren (Raleigh, N.C./ Word of God) scored his 40 points in the morning session with a variety of pull-up jumpers, soft-touch floaters and long jumpers. He led the camp in scoring with 28 points per game. His favorites are Georgetown, Wake Forest, Miami, Florida, NC State and Ohio State.

Paul Biancardi, who has been a head coach and assistant on NCAA tournament teams, is the national director of basketball recruiting. He is also one the voters for the McDonald's All-American Game and Gatorade Player of the Year. Don't forget to follow him on Twitter.
