LSU's recruiting takes a hit

In the middle of another strong recruiting class LSU coach Les Miles now has to find a replacement for his assistant head coach Larry Porter. Porter is accepting the head coaching job at his alma mater, Memphis.

As one of the strongest recruiters in the country, Porter was responsible for many of the elite players on the LSU roster. He has been instrumental in assembling the 2010 class that LSU is currently working on.

While talking to the recruits that Porter has recruited for this LSU class two things have been universally true; they are all happy for Porter and his leaving, while disappointing, is not going to change their decision.

"He was real good to me. He helped me through the entire time. He helped me out when I got hurt and made sure to let me know LSU would stand by me. He has always been honest." Elliot Porter said. "Having the guy who recruited me leave does not affect my decision. He himself told me to pick a school not coaches or players."

One of the uncommitted players that Porter was recruiting, James Wright, was honest in his assessment. "It does affect my recruiting because I have developed such a strong relationship with him. But, how can you be upset? He is doing what is best for his family."

While establishing relationships with the recruits that he is recruiting has been important, the players who were to have Porter as a position coach are just as happy for him, but disappointed they will not spend the next few years under his tutelage.

"I haven't been able to reach him yet. But I'm happy for him. I wish he would be at LSU to coach me, but this is a great opportunity for him." Brandon Worle said. "He has to do what he has to do. Getting a head coaching job is great. I wouldn't expect him to turn it down. I understand that a great young coach is going to be wanted."

"My commitment is very strong. Coach Porter and I had a great bond, as soon as we met it was very strong." Worle continued. "I'm still LSU strong."

Elliot Porter said Larry Porter was very clear in his desire for the LSU commits.

"I talked to him last night after the game, and he told me and my family to stick with LSU. I told him I am happy for him and his family getting their opportunity. It's a big deal for a position coach to get a head coaching job. That says a lot for LSU's program."
