David Esquer agrees to new contract

Cal baseball coach David Esquer has agreed to a new five-year contract to remain with the Golden Bears, the school announced Wednesday.

"I couldn't be happier continuing to be the head baseball coach here at Cal," said Esquer, the 2011 coach of the year. "This is great, not only for myself but for my family. We love it here. And I love the type of high-level student-athlete we attract at the University of California. I am looking forward to continuing the program's playoff success, and my goal is to get us back to the College World Series."

Esquer, who led the Golden Bears to their first College World Series appearance since 1992 this spring, has a 354-313-2 (.531) record at Cal that includes four NCAA regional appearances and Pac-10 Coach of the Year honors in 2001.
