ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Michigan will keep its hockey legend on the sidelines for at least a few more years.
Michigan hockey coach Red Berenson, 72, agreed to a three-year contract extension Monday through the 2015-16 season, ensuring the Sasketchewan native's presence in Ann Arbor through his 75th birthday and for more than 30 years at the school.
Berenson started at Michigan in 1984, won national titles in 1996 and 1998 and has taken the Wolverines to 22 consecutive NCAA tournaments. He has made the Frozen Four 11 times, most recently in 2011.
"I'm pleased that the administration and the program are looking ahead," Berenson said in a statement. "I'm excited about the opportunity to remain at Michigan, especially with the current Yost Ice Arena renovations, the move to the Big Ten and for our incoming recruits. We have a great staff here, and I'm looking forward to the next few years at Michigan."
Financial terms of Berenson's extension were not immediately available. Berenson was paid a base salary of $215,000 in 2011-12 according to public records.
Berenson has a 752-352-77 record in 28 years at Michigan, including 11 CCHA titles. He played at Michigan from 1960 to 1962 followed by a 17-year NHL career with Montreal, St. Louis, Detroit and the New York Rangers before retiring in 1978.
