SMU tabs Van Malone to lead defense

SMU has hired Oklahoma State cornerbacks coach Van Malone to be its defensive coordinator.

An SMU source said Malone is expected to join the program next week after the Cowboys conclude their regular-season finale against Oklahoma this weekend. The Dallas Morning News first reported Malone's hire.

SMU announced former Clemson offensive coordinator Chad Morris as its new head coach earlier in the week.

Malone has been on the staff at Oklahoma State since 2012. Under Malone's tutelage, former Cowboys cornerback Justin Gilbert developed into an All-American and first-round NFL draft pick.

Malone spent the previous two years as the secondary coach and recruiting coordinator at Tulsa. He also had stints at North Texas, Texas A&M and Western Michigan. He played college football at Texas.

Malone and Morris were together on Tulsa's coaching staff in 2010, when Morris was Tulsa's offensive coordinator.
