IRVING, Texas -- Add Felix Jones to the list of Dallas Cowboys coming back from offseason surgery.
Jones had surgery on his right shoulder in January and coach Jason Garrett said he anticipates the running back being fully cleared for the beginning of training camp in late July. Jones was on the practice field for the early portion of Wednesday's organized team activity before heading inside for rehab. He returned toward the end of the session.
"Felix is not involved with any of these OTAs right now," Garrett said Wednesday. "He's getting himself back from the shoulder. He's done a good job within the parameters our medical staff has given him. He looks in good shape. He can't catch a ball yet, so that's an issue, but he's running routes on air and the quarterback's not throwing to him. He's doing things like that."
Jones, who is entering the final year of his contract, was among a handful of players not taking part in the OTA. Linebacker DeMarcus Ware was in Alabama attending the graduation of his sister. Cornerback Mike Jenkins is not attending the OTAs as he rehabs from shoulder surgery but, according to a source, he is looking for a trade.
Cornerback Morris Claiborne (wrist), safety Matt Johnson (school), linebacker Kyle Wilber (finger), guard/center Kevin Kowalski, guard Mackenzy Bernadeau (hip), tackle Jermey Parnell, wide receiver Danny Coale (foot), nose tackle Jay Ratliff and defensive end Marcus Spears (neck) were not on the field. Linebacker Dan Connor was on the practice field but did not take any team or seven-on-seven snaps.
Coale will have surgery Thursday to repair the broken left foot he suffered Wednesday. Garrett said he expects the rookie to be ready for training camp.
"All indications are it's the kind of injury that should have a pretty clean recovery," Garrett said. "It seems like it's a simple surgery and, saying that, everyone understands there's no such thing as a simple surgery. But we are relatively optimistic about the doctors going in and fixing that thing and him being back fairly quickly and him being ready to go on Day 1 of training camp."
