Diaper dandies shine in March spotlight

SPECIAL TO ESPN.COM

March 17
It's exciting to see so many diaper dandies step up and make big plays on the stage of the NCAA Tournament and help their teams reach the Sweet 16.

Think about it ... when Duke was struggling against Notre Dame, who bailed the Blue Devils out? It wasn't one of the Big Three (Jason Williams, Carlos Boozer or Mike Dunleavy). It was Daniel Ewing, a diaper dandy from Houston. Ewing made four big trifectas and scored 18 points to give Duke a spark and help stop the Irish.

Texas' tournament journey has been led by freshman point guard T.J. Ford, who led the nation in assists and hasn't stopped making magic in March (13 assists in two tourney games). Ford and Ewing played together at the same high school in Houston, where they win back-to-back state titles.

UCLA wouldn't be in the Sweet 16 without freshman Dijon Thompson, who came off the bench to spark the Bruins vs. Mississippi in the first round. Thompson has 26 points in two tourney games (9-of-14 from the field).

UConn freshman center Emeka Okafor was a huge factor against a solid Hampton team in the first round. Okafor had 12 points, 15 rebounds and five blocks -- and he's a major reason coach Jim Calhoun's Huskies have been able to move on.
