Like Jeter, Chris Paul has winner's mentality

SPECIAL TO ESPN.COM

Sept. 27, 2004
More from Vitale -- A-Rod, J.J. Redick excel under pressure

In sports, we often talk about athletes who have a winner's mentality. It's important to have a tough mind-set when it comes to getting to the winner's circle.

To me, the person who is numero uno in that area is New York Yankees shortstop and captain Derek Jeter. He is one of the greatest teammates anyone could ever have. He shows unbelievable enthusiasm and energy and he has the ability to respond to challenges. His love for performing on the big stage in the postseason stands out.

Chris Paul
Wake Forest point guard Chris Paul averaged 14.8 points and 5.9 assists last season.
Jeter sets the tone for his teammates.

Just watch his body language and the way he responds when his teammate produces -- the captain is the first person to greet him. He is simply a winner in every way possible.

Think about when he was hitting below .200 early this season. He never made an alibi or an excuse, he simply went about his business and did his job. Jeter responded and showed why he is a future Hall of Famer.

In college basketball, I see Wake Forest point guard Chris Paul as a future star in a leadership role. He already showed a lot last season, and his personality reminds me of Jeter.

You could tell early on about Paul's character and his desire to shine in the spotlight in crunch time, even as a diaper dandy. Paul and Jeter came from great foundations at home, where they had the guidance and direction needed to become the solid people they are today.

Paul leads a Wake Forest team that should have a phenomenal season in 2004-05. He should be special during his sophomore season, possessing loads of energy and passion on the court. Keep watching him, he will be very special.

By the way, did you notice that the Yankees have clinched a playoff berth? It's September, baby, and October is almost here -- and that means Jeter time, baby!
