Aubie's existence began as a cartooncharacter that first appeared on the Auburn/ Hardin-Simmons football program cover on October 3, 1959. Birmingham Post-Herald artist Phil Neel created the cartoon Tiger, who continued to adorn the cover of Auburn's home football programs for 18 years. His presence over that span proved to be somewhat of a good luck charm as the school's football program achieved a home record of 63-16-2.
