A daily glance inside the numbers from the world of sports:
MLB
• David Ortiz's walkoff home run in the 10th inning gave the Red Sox a 5-3 win over the Phillies on Saturday. It was Ortiz's sixth walkoff homer in regular-season play since he joined the Sox in 2003, tying Albert Pujols for the major-league lead in walkoff home runs over that span. It was the ninth regular-season game that Ortiz has won for the Red Sox in walkoff fashion (the three others were with singles), the highest total since 2003 for any major-leaguer.
Ortiz also has won three games in walkoff fashion (two homers, one single) in postseason play, all in 2004.
• Jonathan Papelbon pitched 2 1/3 shutout innings and was the winning pitcher for the Red Sox. Papelbon has allowed only one run in 38 innings pitched this season. Only one other pitcher in the last 40 years allowed no more than one run in his first 38 innings pitched in a season, and that pitcher was also a rookie. Fernando Valenzuela allowed only one run in his first 52 innings pitched in 1981.
• The Indians shut out the Reds, returning the favor from the game before, a Reds shutout over the Tribe on Friday night. It was the fourth time this season that teams traded shutouts in back-to-back games. Milwaukee and Cincinnati did it on April 22-23, Houston and Texas on May 20-21, and San Diego and Colorado on May 29-30.
The Reds have played 13 games this season that ended in a shutout (six wins, seven losses), tying them with Detroit (nine wins, four losses) for the most such games in the majors. Cincinnati played in only nine shutout games in 2005 (one win, eight losses), tying with Tampa Bay for the fewest in the majors.
• The White Sox have scored 83 runs during their nine-game winning streak. It matches the fourth-highest run total over any nine-game span in franchise history. The Sox scored 91 runs over nine games in April 2000, 89 in July 1936, 85 in May 1996 and 83 in July 1936.
• Oakland's bullpen allowed four runs in three innings in relief of Dan Haren. The Athletics' bullpen has allowed 31 earned runs in 31 1/3 innings pitched in games started by Haren, for an ERA of 8.90. That's the worst bullpen support for any major league pitcher who has started at least five games this season.
• Jamie Moyer had an RBI single in Seattle's win over San Diego. The last American League pitcher as old as Moyer (43) with a hit and/or a run batted in was Hoyt Wilhelm on Aug. 1, 1967. Wilhelm was six days past his 44th birthday.
• Ray Durham hit his first career walkoff home run in the Giants' win over the A's. It is career home run No. 156 for Durham. Lance Berkman (201 career homers) was the only active major league player with more career homers than Durham without one that ended a game. Rich Aurilia (155 career homers) now has second place in this category all to himself.
• Jose Reyes had four hits in the Mets' loss in Toronto. Reyes has 28 hits in his last 12 games, tying a franchise record. Two other Mets players had 28 hits over a 12-game span: Frank Taveras in May 1980 and Derek Bell in April 2000.
Ichiro is the only other major league player with 28 or more hits over a 12-game span this season. Ichiro had 30 hits over 12 games from May 30 to June 11.
• The Tigers won their 50th game of the season tonight, the first major league team to reach that level. This is the sixth time in team history that Detroit was the first major league team to 50 wins in a season (1911, 1950, 1961, 1968 and 1984 were the others). The last two such seasons ended with the Tigers winning the World Series.
2006 World Cup
• Lukas Podolski scored both goals in the first 12 minutes of Germany's 2-0 win over Sweden in the round of 16. Only two other players scored a pair of goals in the first 12 minutes of a World Cup match, and they did it on the same day -- June 3, 1962: Valentin Ivanov of Soviet Union (vs. Colombia) and Florian Albert of Hungary (vs. Bulgaria).
• Podolski scored his first goal in the fourth minute after Miroslav Klose scored in the fourth minute of Germany's final group play match against Ecuador. Only four other teams scored in the first five minutes of consecutive World Cup matches (Brazil in 1950, Hungary in 1954, Yugoslavia and Denmark in 1998).
• Argentina defeated Mexico 2-1 in overtime. The Argentines have played extra time in five World Cup matches, and they have advanced each time, including a 3-1 win over the Netherlands in the 1978 final and three penalty-kick victories. Conversely, Mexico has played extra time in three World Cup matches and been eliminated each time. The first two were on PKs (against Germany in 1986 and Bulgaria in 1994).
• Hernan Crespo tied an Argentine World Cup record by scoring in his fourth consecutive game. The record was set by Guillermo Stabile in 1930, when Argentina lost to Uruguay in the final of the first World Cup.
Golf
• Ben Curtis heads into the final round at the Booz Allen Classic with a five-shot lead. Since the start of the 2000 season, 29 players have held a lead of at least five strokes heading into the final round of play at a PGA Tour event, and only two of those 29 players failed to win the tournament. Sergio Garcia had a six-stroke lead at the 2005 Wachovia Championship but lost to Vijay Singh in a playoff, and Steve Lowery held a five-stroke lead at the 2003 B.C. Open but lost by one stroke to Craig Stadler.
This is the second time in 2006 that a player has held at least a five-stroke lead heading into the final round of play. Phil Mickelson led by eight strokes after 54 holes at the BellSouth Classic and went on to win the event by 13 strokes.
• Of the 27 players since the 2000 season who held a lead of at least five strokes heading into the final round of play and went on to victory, 18 won the event by fewer strokes than they led by going into the final day. Justin Leonard had the largest stroke differential. Leonard went into the final round of the 2005 FedEx St. Jude Classic leading Heath Slocum by eight strokes. But after a final-round 73, Leonard barely survived the charge of David Toms and won by a single stroke as Toms posted a 63.
