Eric Neel predicts ...
There are great showdowns all over the floor: Rex Chapman and Billy Donovan duel from beyond the arc. Kevin Grevey and Lenny Wilkens work the slippery mid-range and hit runner after runner. The Jamal Mashburn-Marvin Barnes toe-to-toe battle can finally only be decided by the fact that Barnes is wearing the funkier shoes. Dan Issel and John Thompson beat each other up down on the blocks. And, of course, Sam Bowie battles his own tendency to shrink from big moments.

The game is tight. It's a push. Until it isn't. Ernie D tips the scales with a 12-point burst late in the second half. The Cats can't keep up with him from circle to circle. He ends up with 22 and 14 assists, and Pitino and company end up with the upset.
Final score: Providence 88, Kentucky 79

Scoop Jackson predicts ...
Marvin Barnes shows up right before tipoff with Ki Toy Johnson on one arm and Vida Guerra on the other … with a full-length chinchilla coat over his uniform. Forward John Thompson is having none of it and beats coach Dave Gavitt to the punch … literally. Joe B. Hall's Wildcats have a problem dealing with the size and style of play the two 6-footers, Wilkens and DiGregorio. Their constant attack on both offense and defense disrupts everything Kentucky tries to execute.

With 6 minutes left in the half, Barnes enters the game. He scores 11 points, including a basket over Sam Bowie to end the half and give the Friars a four-point lead. In the second 20 minutes, Providence extends its lead to 12 and never lets UK closer than eight the rest of the way. The balanced scoring of the team makes it impossible for Kentucky to pick its poison. Lenny and Ernie both have 20. Otis Thorpe has 15 and outrebounds the Wildcats' entire frontline with 22. And the oft-slept on Jimmy Walker leads the Friars in scoring with 26.
Final score: Providence 103, Kentucky 88
