Scoop Jackson predicts ...
LSU coach Dale Brown calls a huddle in front of the bench right before the tip. He tells his freshman prodigy, Chris Jackson, that "Ronnie Lester is one of the best guards you're going to see in this tournament. Stay focused." From the tip the Tigers play at a pace unseen in modern sports. Shaquille O'Neal and Bob Pettit grab every defensive rebound, outlet to Maravich, who scores on either pull-up jump shots or layups. By the end of the first half, LSU is leading 66-43.

By the halfway mark of the second half the Tigers' lead is 95-60. Roberts replaces O'Neal, Williams replaces Pettit. But the onslaught still persists even though Connie Hawkins has 43 for the Hawkeyes. The stat line by the end of the game looks like Murderer's Row: Jackson 30; Macklin 21; Pettit 28; Maravich 46; O'Neal 26. All close to their averages. Making Billy Packer say on the air: "They might win this damn thing."
Final score: LSU 164, Iowa 101

Eric Neel predicts ...
It's the first round, so Shaq and Pistol are loving each other. It'll blossom into resentment at some point, but not yet. That's bad news for Iowa, which has come to play with a team that does not include a starter over 6-8. But they do have the great Connie Hawkins, who made our team even though he only played freshman ball at the school before leaving.

By halftime, when they're down 20, Dr. Tom Davis is calling for Acie Earl. Heck, he's calling for Nile Kinnick. The Hawkeye highlight comes when it's over: Hawkins edges Maravich in a postgame bit of "Horse" on a quarters-off-the-top-of-the-glass tomaHawk.
Final score: LSU 94, Iowa 64
