The Springboks, South Africa's national rugby team, were reviled by blacks as a symbol of apartheid. Nelson Mandela's decision to appear in the team's colors at the final and hand the trophy to captain Francois Pienaar after the team won the 1995 Rugby World Cup on home turf surprised many but also was credited with breaking down barriers and instilling a sense of national unity.
