On this date in 1948, Babe Ruth, who had been diagnosed with cancer, made his final public appearance at the premiere of "The Babe Ruth Story," a movie based on his life. He'd return to the hospital soon after and die a few weeks later, with a crowd of fans standing vigil outside.
