Frenchman Magnaldi wins sixth stage of Dakar Rally
ZOUERAT, Mauritania -- Frenchman Thierry Magnaldi won the sixth stage of the Dakar Rally as the cars crossed from Morocco into this desert nation Thursday.
Magnaldi, driving a Schles-Ford-Raid, won the 275-mile stage that began in Tan-Tan, Morocco, in 3 hours, 22 minutes, 54 seconds. Jean-Louis Schlesser, also of France, was 2 minutes, 55 seconds behind.
Giniel de Villiers was 51 seconds farther back in third, but the South African jumped from fifth place to take the overall lead. Carlos Sainz of Spain was another 22 seconds and gave up the overall lead.
The race covers 5,619 miles on a route through 40 countries from Lisbon, Portugal, to the Senegalese capital of Dakar.
