BOSTON -- American Brett Gotcher has joined the elite field for next month's Boston Marathon.

Organizers also announced Friday that American Antonio Vega has dropped out of the 115th running of the marathon on April 18 because of a stress fracture in his pelvis. He finished 12th last year.

Gotcher ran the fourth fastest American marathon debut in Houston in 2010 with a time of 2 hours, 10 minutes and 36 seconds. He'll join former Stanford teammate Ryan Hall in trying to become the first American to win the men's race since Greg Meyer in 1983.

The men's elite field features Kenya's Robert Kiprono Cheruiyot, who won last year in a course-record 2:05.32. Also running are Geoffrey Mutai, Gilbert Yegon, Tadese Tola and Evans Cheruiyot.
