ESPN Zone New York - Quick Questions

Kenny Mayne - SportsCenter Anchor

  • Host of ESPN's Two Minute Drill
  • Joined ESPN in 1994 as a SportSmash anchor
  • Was a Quaterback at UNLV in 1981 and 1982

Kenny Mayne was in the ESPN Zone New York to appear on ESPN Radio's Dan Patrick Show.

ESPN Zone: Who is the best athlete among SportsCenter anchors?
Kenny Mayne:I'm thinking. It depends on the sport. I can throw footballs better than anybody. Dan Patrick played college basketball so he had to be good at that. Stuart [Scott] is a good all-around athlete. Karl Ravech, [John] Buccigross - those guys are great golfers. It really depends on which sport you're talking about.

ESPN Zone: What player name is most difficult to pronounce?
Kenny Mayne: Many hockey players, but once you get them right, then it's like in school when you look up a word you remember it, it's like that. I don't want to look like an idiot out there. So they're so many foreign names with five syllables that are difficult, so I'd say hockey.

ESPN Zone: Have you ever had to interview someone that you trashed on SportsCenter?
Kenny Mayne: I think the closest to that was when I ran across the Connecticut Women's Basketball coach Geno Auriemma at an event. Dan [Patrick] and I had kind of done something that was out of the regular fashion, where we almost did an editorial. Remember when Nykesha Sales got that free lay-in? [Editor's Note: Sales inured her knee in the previous game, but started and scored an uncontested lay-up in the following contest. The lay-up helped establish a Big East Conference scoring record] That night we came out and did a minute of what the hell was that about? And the I ran across him at an event and it felt like he was a little cold. I think he's over it now.

ESPN Zone: Who is the one athlete that makes you say "If he can do it, then I can do it!"?
Kenny Mayne: I would pick like a racehorse somebody like Charismatic, the horse that people didn't believe in very much and worked its way up so it gives you hope that if you keep trying something you'll succeed if your mind to it.

ESPN Zone: What's your favorite game in the Sports Arena?
Kenny Mayne: I'd say the horse racing game, Final Furlong

ESPN Zone: Is there a catchphrase that someone came up with that you wish you came up with?
Kenny Mayne:Not really. I've had some that I wish I thought of on my own and somebody else gave to me I guess that would be the closest thing. People outside of the business. I just got a voice mail from a guy saying "Ghost runner on second," like if a guy gets a double. You know, put it back to when you were a little kid and you had the ghost runners and then next guy singles and, you know, "Ghost runner scores." I'm going to employ that in the next couple of weeks.

ESPN Zone: Have you ever employed other outside stuff?
Kenny Mayne: Oh yeah. The one guy sent in "The blood of the disbelievers shall flow through the streets" for a home run. I like that one.

ESPN Zone: If they were making a movie about you, who would you like to see play you in the movie?
    Kenny Mayne:Tom Cruise, probably.

ESPN Zone: Who would play you?
Kenny Mayne: [Laughing] We'd shoot for Tom Cruise and settle for Albert Brooks.
