Disney Regional Entertainment and ESPN opened the first ESPN Zone at Baltimore's Inner Harbor on July 12, 1998. This flagship 35,000 square foot sports-themed dining and entertainment complex was followed by a second venue in Chicago in July, 1999 and a third in New York's famed Times Square the following September. Additional sites in Atlanta and Washington, D.C. are set to open in 2000.

ESPN Zone entertains sports fans and treats them to great American Grill food in the Studio Grill, offers any game on the air in the ultimate sports viewing environment, the Screening Room, and challenges them with a variety of interactive games and attractions in the Sports Arena.

"Our goal is to make ESPN Zone a total sports experience," said Disney Regional Entertainment President Art Levitt. "We have created an environment that delivers a stadium of choices for every sports enthusiast from the casual viewer to the avid sports fan."

Added ESPN President and CEO and President of ABC Sports Steve Bornstein, "ESPN Zone is the first opportunity for our fans to immerse themselves in a three-dimensional ESPN experience."

The nearly football field-sized venue is equipped with five 10-ft. satellite dishes, four 24-ft. satellite dishes, 40 satellite receivers, ten video cameras, 221 speakers, 49 amplifiers, 211 video monitors (including over a dozen in the bathrooms), state-of-the-art radio studio and full live television broadcasting capabilities.

ESPN Zone was developed by Disney Regional Entertainment, which creates breakthrough entertainment concepts for metropolitan and suburban markets worldwide. Disney Regional Entertainment also operates DisneyQuest, an interactive entertainment adventure that opened in June at Walt Disney World in Orlando; Club Disney, community family playsites now open in Thousand Oaks and West Covina, Calif.; and ESPN Zone.
