What Athletes Eat: Caitlin Leverenz's Hamburger Recipe

Can Caitlin Leverenz top her 2015 season? She's sure going to try. Last year the former Cal-Berkeley standout tied the knot with Cal water polo player Collin Smith before collecting two gold medals at the Pan American Games and notching two first-place finishes at the USA Swimming summer nationals. The 24-year-old has her eyes on the Olympic this summer, and after winning bronze in the 200-meter individual medley at the 2012 London Games, she's hoping to upgrade to gold in 2016.

Leverenz shared one of her favorite postworkout recipes -- and yes, it's a hamburger!

Day and time: A Thursday evening at 6 p.m.

Place: At my apartment with my husband

What I'm eating: Healthy hamburger on a bed of veggies and collard greens, topped with homemade lemon garlic sauce

Whose recipe: I adapted this recipe using ideas from my nutritionist, Tamar Cohen.

Why I'm eating it: I enjoy making delicious and healthy dinners that will help to maximize my recovery and get me ready and fueled for another day of training. I love living in California and taking full advantage of the great produce that is so easily accessible.

The recipe:

Ingredients:
Grass-fed beef patty

Mild cheddar cheese

Collard greens

Onion

2-3 mushrooms

Garlic

Coconut oil

Tomato

2-3 spears of broccoli

Cucumber

Lemon garlic sauce:

3 tablespoons olive oil

1-2 inch ginger root

2-3 fresh garlic cloves

1 tablespoon raw Tahini paste

3 tablespoons raw soybean paste

Juice from two lemons

Grill beef burger and top with mild cheddar cheese. Roll collard greens, cut in small strips and then steam for just a couple of minutes. Sauté onion, mushrooms and fresh garlic (to taste) in coconut oil. (In whatever quanity you want.) Cut up fresh tomatoes, broccoli and cucumber to add on top. Make lemon garlic sauce by combining ingredients in food processor. Drizzle over the dish and enjoy!
