Fantasy baseball: Making sense of suddenly powerful rookies

Aristides Aquino was never supposed to show the kind of power he's been demonstrating of late. What should fantasy managers make of this unexpected output? Getty Images

Houston Astros outfielder Yordan Alvarez and Cincinnati Reds outfielder Aristides Aquino share several things in common -- like each wearing uniform No. 44. Oh, and becoming the first pair of rookies to mash three home runs on the same day, both having done so on Saturday. Yet, there are also many differences. Alvarez has been mashing for months, having accumulated 51 RBIs over his first 46 big league games. He debuted on June 9 and, since then, he has been among the most productive players in the sport, batting .355 and slugging .733. Aquino has been in the majors for less than a fortnight. While this surprising newcomer with a batting stance much like former 1990s journeyman slugger Tony Batista has electrified the Reds (and baseball analysts) with his hard-hit percentage, expectations should be different.
