Browns name Jags WR coach Carmichael offensive coordinator

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Cleveland Browns coach Chris Palmer has handed the reins of offensive coordinator to Pete Carmichael, who worked under Palmer with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Palmer handled both the coaching and coordinator duties in Cleveland's expansion season. After the Browns ranked last in total offense and points (217), it was expected that Palmer would name an offensive coordinator.

Carmichael, 58, has served as receivers coach in all five of Jacksonville's seasons in the NFL. He is credited for helping Jimmy Smith and Keenan McCardell become one of the league's most feared tandems. Since 1996, Smith and McCardell have caught 671 passes for 8,462 yards and 44 touchdowns.

Palmer was the Jaguars offensive coordinator for two seasons before leaving to become the Browns' first coach in January 1999.
