Davis breaks Biondi's American record at U.S. Swimming Trials

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Josh Davis broke Matt Biondi's American record in the 200-meter freestyle at the U.S. Swimming Trials tonight. But he has his sites set higher than bronze.

Davis won the 200 freestyle final and qualified for the Olympics on the fourth day of the trials with a time of 1 minute, 47.26 seconds, .46 seconds better than the American record set by Biondi in 1988.

The 27-year-old Davis gives the United States a good chance at its first gold medal in the event since 1976 when the Olympics get under way in Sydney, Australia. Biondi settled for bronze in 1988.

Scott Goldblatt, Davis' teammate at the University of Texas, edged Chad Carvin by five-hundredths of a second for the second Olympic berth, finishing in 1:48.12.

Carvin already had qualified for the 400 freestyle, finishing second Wednesday.

Four other Olympic spots were locked up tonight on the Indiana University-Purdue University campus -- two each in the men's 100 backstroke and the women's 100 breaststroke.

Lenny Krayzelburg won the backstroke with a time of 53.84 seconds, .24 seconds off the world record he set nearly a year ago but only one-hundredth of a second better than Neil Walker.

Krayzelburg already held four of the top-10 all-time times in the event.

Megan Quann won the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.26, a day after setting the American record with a 1:07.12. She will be joined in Sydney by Staciana Stitts, who edged Kristy Kowal by one-hundredth of a second in 1:07.79.
