As a high school track star, Marion Jones dominated the California state championship meet for four consecutive years. As a basketball player, she averaged 22.8 points per game and was named California Division I Player of the Year.

Marion Jones dominated in winning the 100 meters at the Olympics in 10.75 seconds.
As a point guard, Jones helped North Carolina to the NCAA championship in her freshman year, but a broken foot ultimately led her to give up basketball and concentrate on track. Her inspiration was the late Florence Griffith Joyner.

Marion Jones entered the 2000 Olympics amid much hype and fanfare after publicly stating her intention to win an unprecedented five gold medals in Sydney. Jones came up short of her goal, settling for bronze in the long jump and 400-meter relay while taking gold in the 100, 200 and 1,600 relay. But her performance was historic nonetheless. Jones won more medals at a single Olympics than any other female track athlete ever.

Waxing philosophical, she said: "I set out to do something that a lot of people thought I couldn't do. I didn't get everything I wanted, but I didn't give in. I had a great shot, and it didn't pan out. I can live with that."

Marion Jones was born Oct. 12, 1975, in Los Angeles.
